Species are variable in their appearance. Some are small wild flowers, while others are shrubs. Readily hybridize with each other, making identification difficult.
In general, members of the genus can be identified by sharp dagger-shaped tips of the anthers of flowers on the disc from the center of the flower.
The flower heads are usually like daisies and usually of a purplish or blue, but can be pink, yellow or white. They are native to western North America.
