Nothoscordum Occurrence & Description

The Nothoscordum, sometimes called the bastard form flowers, a plant genus in the subfamily of the onion family (Allioideae). The genus name is derived from Greek Nothoscordum: notho to be wrong and scordum for garlic. The genus includes about 25 species.

Occurrence

The genus is originally available only in the New World. Most species are native to South America, there are some in North America. In many countries they are invasive plants.

Description

Nothoscordum species are perennial herbaceous plants. The plants have little or no smell of garlic or onions. This egg-shaped bulbs are geophytes with membranous wrapping and many aerial bulbs as Überdauerungsorgane.

The leaves are usually present during the flowering period. The leaves are alternate and spirally arranged mostly in a basal rosette. The sessile, simple, parallelnervigen leaves are linear and thready. The leaf margin is smooth.
