Rush Lily

The rush lily (Aphyllanthes monspeliensis), also called Blue Rush is the only species of the genus Aphyllanthes and forms its own subfamily in the family of asparagus plants (Asparagaceae). It is native in the western Mediterranean.

Description

The rush lily is a perennial herbaceous plant. The xerophytic plant produces short rhizomes as Überdauerungsorgane. The leaves are reduced and are accumulated at the base of the plants.

The inflorescences are wenigblütig or the flowers are individually. The hermaphroditic, but somewhat flowers are triadic. The six conformed bracts (tepals) are grown and blue at the base to a short tube.

There are six stamens present. The three carpels are fused into a oberständigen ovary. It forms capsule fruits.
