The Flowers of Leg Break Plant

The leg break (Narthecium ossifragum) is a plant of the family Nartheciaceae. It is a rare plant of peaty moorland, especially on the edge of river valleys and also on blue grasslands. The species is on the red list in the Netherlands and Flanders.


It is a 10 to 30 cm high perennial plant of the lily family. Its bright yellow flowers and usually massive action to make the plant in flower (June-August) bears unmistakable. Also in the fall is that because of the large, orange-red fruit capsules.


Long been thought that bone-crushing bone fractures caused by the cattle. One possible explanation is that this plant only grows in acidic soils, where little or no lime in it, while calcium is needed for a solid skeleton. Another possible explanation is that this plant only grows in damp soil where animals can easily away bags fractures while walking.
